Abode Services was proud to have two directors recently speak on panels during the 2014 National Conference on Ending Homelessness in Washington D.C. The directors spoke about successful efforts housing people using a rapid re-housing philosophy.

Last month, Abode Services was proud to have two of our directors give presentations during the preeminent national conference on ending homelessness.

Associate Director Vivian Wan and Director of Strategic Initiatives Stacey Murphy spoke at the 2014 National Conference on Ending Homelessness in Washington D.C. about how Abode Services, in collaboration with our partner organizations, continues to successfully implement rapid re-housing.

Rather than send people who are homeless to a shelter or interim housing, rapid re-housing places individuals and families in permanent housing first, then begins to address the issues that led to their homelessness.

Vivian and Stacey each spoke to a specific aspect of our rapid re-housing program approach.

Vivian discussed our success housing single adults, who are typically more difficult to house than families. Stacey discussed the challenge of finding affordable housing quickly in a high-priced rental market.

Both spoke about the approaches we use - from landlord outreach to a "whatever it takes" philosophy - in supporting participants to make rapid re-housing work in challenging circumstances.

"It's always great to be part of an event with other exceptional professionals who are working together to end homelessness," Vivian said. "We learned a lot, and I hope we were able to help others find new ways to solve homelessness."
